Red Comes to Mousouri Theatre This October
One of the most acclaimed contemporary plays of the 21st century arrives at Mousouri Theatre this October.
Red, the award-winning play by John Logan, is directed by Giorgos Kimoulis and produced by Karolos Pavlakis, starring Giorgos Kimoulis and Dimitris Gkotsopoulos.
About the Show
Set in the late 1950s inside the New York studio of legendary abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko, Red explores a defining moment in the artist’s life as he works on the most prestigious commission of his career—a series of monumental paintings for the walls of a luxury Manhattan restaurant.
For Rothko, art is a space for contemplation and emotional truth. But when his work is destined to hang above the tables of wealthy diners, he is forced to confront a difficult question: Can art remain pure when it becomes a commodity?
With an extraordinary fee on the table, Rothko must choose between staying true to his principles or compromising with the very world he despises.
A Powerful Clash of Generations
Working alongside Rothko is Ken, a young aspiring painter who deeply admires his mentor but is no longer afraid to challenge him. Their relationship evolves into a gripping intellectual and emotional confrontation, reflecting the timeless conflict between established masters and emerging voices.
At its heart, Red is a story about:
- Artistic integrity versus commercial success
- The relationship between mentor and student
- The passing of knowledge from one generation to the next
- The courage to question tradition
- The painful journey toward becoming an independent creator
As Rothko pushes Ken through relentless lessons about art, life, and purpose, he gradually discovers that teaching is never one-sided. The student must eventually confront the master, and the master, in turn, learns from the student.
Because there can be no true artistic birth without conflict.
An International Award-Winning Production
Since its premiere, Red has been celebrated as one of the most important modern plays.
The production first premiered in London in 2009, starring Alfred Molina as Mark Rothko and Eddie Redmayne as Ken, under the direction of Michael Grandage.
It transferred to Broadway in 2010 with the original cast, where it won six Tony Awards, including Best Play, cementing its place as a modern theatrical classic.
