Girls Should Not Play Football: A Contemporary Theatrical Story at Mikros Kerameikos
A contemporary theatrical story about stereotypes, silence, and the truths we are afraid to speak, at Mikros Kerameikos.
What could possibly connect a 12-year-old girl, a young woman, and a middle-aged man And why did their families not know they were in the same car?
A serious car accident becomes ground zero for a story that unfolds in a hospital waiting room. There, amid anxiety and uncertainty, hidden relationships, long-buried emotions, family fractures, and deeply rooted prejudices come to light.
The performance “GIRLS SHOULD NOT PLAY FOOTBALL” is not just a family drama. It is a sharp, contemporary exploration of human relationships and the roles imposed on us — or the ones we impose on others.
Beyond the Title
The title works as a symbol.
It is not only about football. It represents all the “should nots” that follow our children, our partners, and ourselves. It speaks to gender stereotypes, social expectations, and the invisible restrictions passed down from one generation to the next.
In an era where communication technologies evolve rapidly and social media feeds overflow with curated images of happiness, how well do we truly know our loved ones?
Do we know their dreams? Their inner conflicts? Their silent wounds?
Ignorance, however “innocent” it may seem, can lead to dark paths.
A Performance About What Was Never Said
Beginning with a car accident, the play delves into profound family issues and challenges the structures we consider stable and unquestionable. The characters are forced to confront the truth — not only about each other, but about themselves.
This performance is dedicated to everything that should have been said… but never was.
