Manolakis Couleur Locale Trio at Theatre of the No

On Friday, October 9 at 21:30, Theatre of the No welcomes the Manolakis Couleur Locale Trio for a special live performance that brings together the musical heritage of Crete with contemporary improvisation and a modern approach to sound.

At the heart of the trio is Giorgis Manolakis, one of the distinctive voices of contemporary Cretan music. Through his unique use of the laouto, combined with effects pedals and extended techniques, he explores new sonic possibilities for the traditional instrument, creating an expressive and highly personal musical language.

Joining him on stage are Dimitris Klonis on drums and Dimitris Tsekkouras on double bass. Together, the three musicians create an open musical dialogue, moving between rhythm, improvisation and elements drawn from the Cretan tradition.

The trio’s repertoire is built around compositions by Giorgis Manolakis, which provide the foundation for an evolving and spontaneous musical journey. Traditional references are transformed through the trio’s contemporary perspective, resulting in a performance driven by rhythmic energy, interplay and experimentation.

Born in Heraklion, Crete, Manolakis grew up in a musical family and began studying music at an early age with his father, Kostas Manolakis. His career has included collaborations with the Hainides and Ross Daly, while his first solo recording was released in 2009.

With its distinctive combination of traditional influences and contemporary improvisation, the Manolakis Couleur Locale Trio brings a fresh perspective to Cretan music, using tradition not as a limitation but as a starting point for musical exploration.
