A Tragic Farce About Loneliness, Communication and the Need to Leave a Mark

Written in 1952, The Chairs remains remarkably relevant today. Through absurdity, dark humor and existential tension, Ionesco explores loneliness, communication, memory, and the deeply human desire to leave something behind.

An elderly couple prepares for the arrival of a series of invisible guests. As the chairs on stage begin to multiply, a Speaker is invited to deliver the couple’s long-awaited “great message” about life.

But the guests never appear.

As reality and imagination gradually blur, the absurd becomes a reflection of a deeply human need: the desire to communicate, to be heard, and to feel that our existence matters.

Through its dark humor and surreal situations, Ionesco asks a timeless question:

What remains of us when we are gone, and what mark can we truly leave behind?

The Absurd as a Mirror of Human Existence

In The Chairs, the absurd is more than a theatrical device. It becomes a way of exploring the contradictions of human existence and our fragile attempts to find meaning in a world that offers no easy answers.

Beneath the play’s comic surface lies a profound anxiety: the fear that life is short, that we may pass unnoticed, and that ultimately we may leave nothing behind.

The stage gradually fills with chairs for people the audience never sees, creating an image that is at once comic, surreal and deeply moving.

Yoel Wulfhart’s Directorial Vision

Director Yoel Wulfhart approaches The Chairs as a confrontation with the human desire to find meaning in a world without simple answers.

His interpretation embraces the tension between absurdity and existential anxiety, creating a theatrical space where humor and melancholy constantly meet.

The production highlights humanity’s endless search for purpose while inviting audiences to reflect not only on the world Ionesco creates on stage, but also on the choices each of us makes in our own lives.

Post-Show Conversation with the Audience

The experience does not end when the curtain falls.

After every performance, audiences will be invited to take part in a discussion exploring the play, its themes, and the timeless questions it raises about loneliness, communication and the search for meaning.

It is an opportunity to share thoughts, questions and different interpretations of one of the most important works of the Theatre of the Absurd.

A Timeless Question Takes the Stage

With one of the most celebrated works of the Theatre of the Absurd as its starting point, Theatre of the NO invites audiences to experience a production that combines dark humor, existential reflection and striking theatricality.

The Chairs speaks to our need to communicate, to be loved, to leave our mark, and to believe that our lives have meaning.

Perhaps, in the end, the most important question is not simply what we will leave behind, but what we choose to do with the time we have.
