A Powerful Historical–Religious Drama Premiering in Athens
“Saint John the Forerunner—A Voice in the Wilderness” is a deeply moving and spiritually charged production. This historical-religious drama invites audiences into a profound theatrical experience centered on faith, truth, and sacrifice.
A Clash Between Truth and Power
Written by Eftychia K. Argyropoulou, the play draws inspiration from the life of Saint John the Forerunner, focusing on the dramatic conflict between John, Herod, Herodias, and Salome.
Its dramaturgical foundation is rooted in the Gospel texts, ecclesiastical tradition, and religious poetry, while also engaging with elements of world dramaturgy. The lyrical and symbolic tone of the text enhances the emotional and spiritual depth of the narrative.
The story unfolds during the final moments of John the Forerunner in prison — a journey of silence, inner struggle, and spiritual illumination. This sacred path stands in stark contrast to the moral decay of worldly authority.
- Herod appears as a divided ruler, tormented by fear and guilt.
- Herodias embodies the arrogance of power and an unrelenting thirst for revenge.
- Salome emerges as a tragic figure, torn between desire, remorse, and the possibility of spiritual awakening.
The performance ultimately guides the audience on an inner journey: from the darkness of human ambition to the light of sacrifice and eternal truth.
Direction with Spiritual Depth
The production is co-directed by Menelaos V. Tsavellas and Eftychia K. Argyropoulou.
Menelaos V. Tsavellas is the only contemporary director in Greece who has systematically devoted his artistic work to religious theatrical drama. Through acclaimed productions that left a significant cultural impact, he has revived the genre with a modern aesthetic while preserving its spiritual essence. With this new stage composition, he returns with a work of profound emotional and spiritual intensity.
The poetic text by Argyropoulou elevates the performance into a meditative and symbolic theatrical experience.
