From November 9, the production will be performed every Monday and Tuesday at 9:00 PM, for 10 performances only, with both Greek and English subtitles.

A Story Between Two Languages

At the heart of Mother Tongue is Skyler Doukas, a middle-aged Greek stand-up comedian living and working in London. After years away from Greece, she returns to her home country and finds herself confronted with memories and traumatic experiences that have shaped her life.

Blending stand-up comedy, spoken word, storytelling and animation, the performance moves fluidly between Greek and English. Rather than simply translating one language into another, Mother Tongue creates a third theatrical language—one that allows the audience to connect with Skyler’s story regardless of which language they speak.

Armed with humor and honesty, Skyler embarks on an intense journey of self-discovery and reconciliation. Her complicated relationship with her mother, the tender memory of her late father, and the trauma of her relationship with her mother’s second husband gradually come to the surface.

As the story unfolds, language becomes more than a means of communication. The tension between a mother tongue and an acquired language becomes a catalyst for forgiveness, healing and redefining the self.

When Comedy Meets Trauma

Mother Tongue explores the powerful connection between language and memory—the way our earliest words can carry entire worlds of emotion, family history and personal experience.

The production also examines ideas of homeland and the expectations we place upon the places we call home, alongside grief, abuse and the lasting impact of trauma.

One of the central challenges of the production is balancing the comic and tragic dimensions of Skyler’s story. Humor becomes a way of confronting difficult experiences, while the shifts between Greek and English create an additional layer of emotional and theatrical tension.

The result is an explosive present in which performer and audience share both the painful and unexpectedly funny moments of a life shaped by memory.

A Bilingual Theatrical Experience

The performance alternates between English and Greek, accompanied by subtitles in both languages.

This bilingual structure is an essential part of the theatrical experience, reflecting Skyler’s own relationship with the two languages and the different identities, memories and emotions they represent.

At once intimate, funny and emotionally charged, Mother Tongue invites audiences to consider how the language we inherit—and the language we acquire—can shape the way we remember, understand and ultimately make peace with our past.
