In this distinctive duo performance, the lyra becomes the centre of a living musical dialogue between Cretan music, the modal traditions of the East, improvisation and contemporary creation. The artists’ compositions and improvisations leave room for the moment, for connection and for the ongoing search for new sonic paths.

Ross Daly and Kelly Thoma do not approach tradition as something static. Instead, they treat it as a living space—one that evolves, renews itself and enters into a creative dialogue with the present.

The term “Contemporary Modal Music”, introduced by Ross Daly, describes a musical approach rooted in modal traditions that brings together ancient musical practices and contemporary creative exploration.

Of Irish origin and a permanent resident of Crete since 1975, Ross Daly is the founder of the Labyrinth Musical Workshop. With more than 35 albums and collaborations with important musicians from around the world, he has developed a distinctive musical language inspired by the modal traditions of the East and Crete.

Kelly Thoma began studying the lyra with Ross Daly in 1995 and has participated in Labyrinth’s international musical activities since 1998. She has collaborated with major musicians and ensembles internationally and has released three solo albums: Anamkhara, 7Fish and Ama Kopasoun oi Kairoi.

A meeting of two generations of musical experience and an invitation to discover a shared, open musical world.
