“Synehiseis”: Where the Politiki Lyra Meets Polyphony at Theatre of the NO
Lyra Quartet and the “Kalesma” Vocal Ensemble present “Synehiseis”, a unique musical collaboration where the politiki lyra meets polyphony and Cypriot musical tradition engages in dialogue with Greek heritage and contemporary composition.
The performance will take place on Thursday, October 29, at 21:00, at Theatre of the NO.
Drawing inspiration from the musical traditions of Cyprus and Greece, “Synehiseis” creates a shared sonic landscape where traditional melodies meet new compositions, while historical memory is transformed into contemporary artistic expression. The distinctive sound of the politiki lyra comes together with the human voice, creating a dialogue between tradition and contemporary musical creation.
Led by internationally acclaimed musician Sokratis Sinopoulos, Lyra Quartet brings together Sokratis Sinopoulos, Chrysanti Gika, Dimosthenis Karachristodoulou and Stratis Psaradellis. Through arrangements of traditional pieces and original compositions by Sokratis Sinopoulos, the four musicians explore the distinctive sound of the politiki lyra, highlighting the wide range of techniques and musical idioms associated with the instrument.
The performance also features the six-member “Kalesma” Vocal Ensemble, with Paris Paraschou, Anastasia Zakynthinou, Frederiki Tombazou, Savvas Lagou, Katerina Paraschou and Vasilis Philippou. The ensemble serves as a vibrant expression of Cypriot and Greek musical heritage, combining polyphonic approaches to traditional songs with new compositions and highlighting the human voice as a vehicle for collective memory and artistic expression.
“Synehiseis” approaches tradition not as something static, but as a continuously evolving creative process. Cypriot musical identity meets the broader Greek musical landscape, creating a bridge of communication where historical memory, collective expression and contemporary artistic creation come together.
