Minos Matsas – Rebetika II + Fado, Tango & Blues
Step into a soul-stirring night of music with Minos Matsas – Rebetika II + Fado, Tango & Blues: Songs of the World, a concert that transcends borders, languages, and eras. Following last year’s sold-out performance at the historic Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Greek composer Minos Matsas returns with a powerful new edition—a musical mosaic that blends rebetiko with global folk traditions, from the saudade of Portugal’s fado to the smoky passion of Argentine tango and the raw emotion of American blues.
A Musical Tapestry Woven from Pain, Love, and Hope
This is not just a concert—it’s a journey into the heart of humanity. Minos Matsas creates a rich, genre-spanning evening with rebetika that speaks to the universal experiences of exile, injustice, poverty, heartbreak, loneliness, and yearning. From the underground haunts of 1930s Piraeus to the streets of Lisbon, the bordellos of Buenos Aires, and the deep South of the United States, each musical tradition echoes the same emotional truths.
The common thread? Authenticity. That rare quality in music that transcends culture, connects hearts and stays with you long after the last note fades.
Rebetika songs Meets Fado, Tango, and the Blues
Minos Matsas signs an evening-an ode to the world’s folk music traditions. From the underground haunts of Piraeus and Botaniko, to the slums of Lisbon and the alleys of Buenos Aires, to the blues harmonies of the American South, the performance is built on a common human experience.
The rebetika songs, born from the pain of uprooting and social injustice, meet the fado of Portugal, with its 40 years of dictatorship and Portuguese saudade. The blues of America, a cry of African-Americans against slavery, mingle with the Argentine tango, an immigrant music that became a global passion and art.
A Personal Legacy – Rebetiko in His Blood
On the stage of the Herodion, alongside Minos Matsas on piano, 15 great musicians and 5 top performers from Greece and abroad participate, offering a multi-layered, captivating musical result.
For Minos Matsas, this project is more than artistic—it’s personal. His grandfather who was also named Minos Matsas, was a legendary figure in Greek music history and head of the iconic Odeon-Parlophone label. He was among the first to believe in and record major rebetiko pioneers like Markos Vamvakaris, Vassilis Tsitsanis, and Giannis Papaioannou, giving voice to a genre that many once dismissed.
Now, his grandson reimagines that legacy. With creative arrangements, new musical layers, and a modern soundscape, Minos Matsas builds a powerful bridge between past and present all while respecting tradition and speaking to today’s soul.
